13th Annual SATMA Awards Happening in the North West at Bokone Bophirima.

The South African Traditional Music Achievement Awards (SATMA Awards) will be held at the Mmabatho Convention Centre in the North West Province at Bokone Bophirima for the second time, with North West Government being the main/headline sponsor.

The SATMA Awards, are now running in the 13th year. Each year SATMA Awards uses a different theme in ensuring youth engagement and involvement, this year’s theme is “Embracing your Heritage”. The SATMA Awards have endeavoured in celebrating culture, traditions and heritage by honouring platforms and individuals that promote traditional music in all artistic aspects, throughout its 12 years of existence The Awards were hosted in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal Provinces previously and will now be hosted in the North West Province, together with the North West Government “Bokone Bophirima” in Mahikeng.

This year’s nominees were announced in Cape Town Robben Island on the 18th of August 2018. We have over 200 nominees across all traditional music genres, this illustrates how vast and diverse our cultures and heritage are. The nominee announcement event was attended by Ministers, MECs, MPs, Kings, Stakeholders and prominent Business Men and Women who are also set to attend the main event.

Every year the SATMA Awards honour a legend and a veteran who has played a pivotal role in changing and influencing the public positively. In embracing heritage, we will be honouring his Majesty King Hinsta (of the Xhosa Kingdom), Ukhozi FM DJ Khathide Ngobe, Rex Rabanye, Sol Plaatje alongside 3 other legends from the North West Province, at the main event taking place on the 29th of September, with special performances by Sjava, Mafikizolo and Distruction Boyz to name a few.
