As an active participant in the socio cultural space, SABC 1 will pay its dues in full by playing an active role in this year’s 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign which will kick off nationally from 25 November -10 December.

The channel has created a scheduling event for Mzansi women to tell their stories of abuse in their own voices. The television platform is titled - THE ORANGE COUCH - the television show will start screening on SABC 1 from Monday 11 November 2019 at 18h00, for a 5-week period on Mondays and Tuesdays.

THE ORANGE COUCH is an SABC 1 Special on the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence telling stories of abuse by different women.

THE ORANGE COUCH provides a platform for abused women to freely share their plight. Each female who relates her story sits on the Orange Couch – made to feel free, embraced and comfortable. The purpose of the show is to inspire those in the midst of abuse to find their own strength to break the chains that hold them in dangerous relationships or unavoidable gender discrimination in society or the workplace, motivating them to raise their heads and voices.

In the very first episode of the show, on Monday 11 November 2019, at 18h00 the show will tell the story of Nelly Matshaba who grew up as a child struggling to fit in, no one ever apologised to her when they wronged her until she met her abuser. He would hit her, push her around, cheat on her and thereafter apologise. It seemed normal to her because she got something that she never got growing up which is an APOLOGY. Things had to get ugly before it got better!

The Orange Couch will screen 2 days a week, Mondays and Tuesday at 18h00, for 5 weeks and will have repeat shows scheduled for Thursdays at 21h00.

The channel will also flight a documentary produced by SABC News called SENZANI on Monday 18 November 2019 at 21h00. The 48 minutes documentary will offer viewers a timeline of gender-based violence reports that made headlines from 2017 to date.
