Drama - Local

The second season of Montana – the 13-part local drama series chronicling the lives, loves and aspirations of a diverse group of characters living in the Western Cape.

The series is set in a district near Cape Town where the inhabitants from different backgrounds and demographic groups were historically segregated into separate worlds by the rule of law.  But now, with these geographical and political boundaries no longer enforced, their lives become intertwined and their destinies inextricably linked.  MONTANA chronicles the tangled lives of four families who live in and around this melting pot district.

The four families are: the Jordaans – a family with strong community roots in both the commercial and political sector; the Ntshingas – a working class family with aspirations for the future which are threatened by secrets from the past; the destitute Yilis – a family struggling to elevate themselves from the poverty they have endured for so long; and the affluent but wildly dysfunctional married couple, the Duzes.

In particular MONTANA focuses on the principal twenty-something couple, the engaged-to-be married Victor Jordaan (Charles Tertiens) and Nolitha Ntshinga (Zikhona Sodlaka) who live together and, like the suburb in which they reside, are a symbol of the unification of the two previously segregated worlds.

The love triangle between Victor, Nolitha and Lwazi – also known as “Sparks” (Anelisa Phewa) heats up this season as secrets of the past come to light in scary ways... and as always have an effect on the whole Montana community. Who will Noli choose – the dangerous passion of her affair with Lwazi or the pure, romantic love she shares with Victor... or can she have both?

In this second season of Montana, new, colourful characters join the already star studded cast. Namely, Mzu Ntantiso who plays Vuks, Vatiswa’s (played by Ayanda Tini) younger brother who is always ready to party. There’s a new addition to the B-Boys group, Pepi de Nobriga plays in the role of Trix. She is a feisty young dancer who joins the boys as they battle it out for top honours at break dancing competitions. Will she be accepted by Denver (Ambrose Uren), Zola (Mthunzi Ntoyi) and Simphiwe (Buntu Plam)?

Dalene is back with a vengeance this season as she raises the stakes in business and pleasure. Her devoted husband, Winston (now played by Ruben Engel) is tested by his wife’s business plans. Will his political career be affected by her shady dealings?

The twins, Zoli (Zikhona Mda) and Zola (Mthunzi Ntoyi) follow on their journey of self discovery as they work their way through young love and friendships. Zola’s dream of break dancing is tested by his health. Zoli’s tumultuous past creeps up into her present as she battles with the consequences of her brief prostitution. She finds love in the most unexpected place but can she keep her love, her past and her family together?

In this season we are entertained by the music and flare of the B-Boys as well as cameo performances by Emo Adams and Take Note, DJ Easy and one of Montana’s own, Rochelle (played by Lu Chase) who wows the crowds with her on stage charisma. Is this how Rochelle intends to sweep the unrequited love of her life off his feet?

MONTANA is produced by Penguin Films, under the creative direction of producer, Roberta Durrant.

The drama unfolds when MONTANA starts on SABC1 Mzansi Fo Sho on Tuesday the 17th of January 2012 at 20:30.

Fallen presents worlds in conflict. On the one hand, the established world of old money, privilege and power represented by Rana-Churchill, private owners of a sugar mill and the cane fields that surround it. On the other, that of Mvelo Nobela, youthful heir to the Durban business empire of his late father. Mvelo is a hip, urban, up-and-coming music producer. It is his style and energy that sets much of the tone and defines the visual approach and sound design of the story, as he takes on the establishment and seeks to overthrow it. We will therefore subvert the glossy complacencies of the “rich and famous” genre. We’ll use a camera style that nods to that of investigative documentary, while still keeping the energy, flow and dynamism of storytelling for drama. But a calmer and more classical style will reflect in the homes of Rana-Churchill.

In our story, upmarket Durban and rural KZN become characters themselves. Mvelo's club, Anil's yacht, and the big city bustle. etc will be contrasted with the lush green opulence of Rana-Churchill and the elegant homes of its owners. A further element is the noise and dust of the mill that never sleeps and relentlessly occupies over three hundred workers, many of whom live in a nearby township. This setting will be part of the rich masala that makes up the uniquely South African world of “Fallen.”

Cast List: Yonda Thomas (Mvelo Nobela), Mbali Ntuli (Lindiwe Ntuli), Joquin Leyn Pillay (Anil Rana), Jennifer Steyn (Deborah Churchill), Claire Gordon Webster (Rachel Churchill), Xolile Tshabalala (Mandi Mbalula), Owen Sejake (Xolani Mahlangu), Afzal Khan (Narayan Rana), Gabisile Tshabalala (Cindi Shabangu), Khulu Skenjana (S’bu Majola), Muzi Clive Ngwenya (Simon Ndlovu), S’thandiwe Kgoroge (Grace Ndlovu), Ronnie Nyakale (Khaya Ncube), and Nomsa Xaba (Zanele Ncube).
